Man Turns Massive Log into Amazing CANOE | Start to Finish Build by

The cultural significance of double outrigger sailing canoes is profound in many indigenous island cultures, particularly in the Pacific Islands. These canoes hold a special place in the traditions, ceremonies, and daily lives of these communities.
Michael Atkinson shows us how he built one of these canoes using a blend of traditional and modern techniques.
Visit Michael's channel Outback Mike to see how he survives while he travels.
If you like canoes and woodworking, keep watching to discover this amazing project.

    # 1 You've apparently never seen a birch canoe. #2 Dugouts are not made with chainsaws, it's done with FIRE. There were no axes, no adz, no draw knives either. No steel tools of any kind. The entire video is bullshit.

This is simply very impressive. I don't know where he learned from but his teacher definitely gave him everything. And, he inherited it all very well. I absolutely love seeing these traditional crafts still going on one after another generation. Because one had to get through several generations of tinkering, this is simply human cultural relic in fact.

Great outcome for your massive project. Noticed the use of calipers (self-made, good job) and remembered about dugout canoe builders of the USA Northwest using the process of completing the exterior of the hull first. Then drilling holes from the exterior inward and driving wooden rods with painted tips into the holes to the intended hull thickness. These painted tips would be exposed when the proper thickness was excavated from the interior. The hull would then be expanded by filling it with water, which was brought to a sustained boil with hot rocks so the wood became flexible enough to expand using wedges.

Great job! Really enjoyed watching and gained a lot of respect for the original builders of these craft and for you and your skill and tenacity to see it through. The use of traditional tools and modern power tools show the scope of what the original builders went through also.

Those original builders were some ingenious and innovative people and tenacious in their ability to sail the southern oceans. It took him a year with power tools assisting him and it’s my understanding that a community would build them in a matter of weeks. Everyone pitched in the the effort and I wonder how many set out never to return

@@mojoden Well...I really was referring to the type of boat/canoe construction, you know the carving out of a tree log? Hence the term "dug out" Dugouts are the oldest boats archaeologists have found, dating back more than 8,000 years to the Neolithic Stone Age. Kinda old school, and if you're talking about chain saws, well they've been around since 1918. Is that not "old school enough?" 😉
