Amazing how you show his work for your profit. I subscribe to Shoyan's channel, the guy struggles enough to keep viewership on his channels without people like you essentially copying his videos and stealing his views. Shame on you.

Japan has a "TSUYU"(rainy season) of about 1.5 months between spring and summer, with high temperatures and humidity continuing from the rainy season through summer. Many foreigners may wonder, "How durable are wooden buildings? However, in Japan, wooden structures dating back 1,000 years are still in existence. In addition, Japan is a very earthquake-prone country. Nails are only for auxiliary purposes, The basic principle is to use a lot of "SAN"(cleats) and "SUZIKAI"(diagonals). This is the work of "TAKUMI" carpenters who are well versed in the vitality and toughness of wood.

Thanks for the info! Fortunately, they don't get tornadoes like we do in the Midwest U.S. I am rather surprised to see standard stairs used instead of tanzu-style (drawer and secret compartment) ones.

@@catwhispurrer137 The storage space like a secret base under the stairs, for some reason, is not seen very often in Japan. That is an interesting method. In the traditional Japanese style, there is an OSHIIRE (closet), a space built as part of each room. In a Japanese-style tatami bedroom, FUTONs (bedding) are put in and out of there every day. Recently, Western-style bedrooms and wall closets have become more common, but in any case, the lack of storage space in Japanese houses is often a problem.

Amazing! This guy is more of a master woodworker than a finish carpenter. You can see he take pride in his work as every fit and finish is perfect. He’s obviously mastered his trade over many years. It’s amazing the quality of work, time spent and quality of wood they put in this house and simply cover it up where you’ll never see a lot of it.

I am interested in doing the same type of extension on my house with LVL (laminated) boards, I like how there is no 'nogging' between the studs, being cross braced instead. It all seems so simple, yet ingenious at the same time. Edit: However I will use my rubber or wooden mallets, not my fists for the stubborn pieces. 😅

In an island country that experiences many earthquakes and some floods, your homes should be elevated with the use of iron/steel posts/pillars. In other words, the 1st floor of the house should be a garage and the 2nd floor should be the living space. And in order to allow the iron posts to jiggle a bit during an earthquake, the base of the post should be resting in a concrete basin/well where the concrete bottom is shaped slightly round & the bottom of the posts can have iron spheres/balls that are welded securely to the posts. … In other words, designIng Japanese homes with the ability to sway just a little bit during an earthquake, helps the entire structure to stay intact.

The design and concept have been simplified to an incomparable level these days in Japan. The greatest change has been in the roof design and overall shape. I assume cost and an ever increasing lower than middle class wage earner families are the cause. Most homes built now in Japan are cube in plan and slight grade flat roof hidden by the wall face facade. Natural airflow now is derived from mechanical methods with windows generally for light transfer at a minimum dimension. I have noticed that usually one larger dimension window at second levels I believe which may be for emergency access or exit. The craftsmanship hasn’t been lost from what I have seen.

I am from Canada, and while I can build a beautiful and warm house, and I'm sure I could follow their technique for earthquake and hurricane resistance, I don't know proper technique for dealing with termites and/or carpenter ants, and the thought of building a wood framed structure somewhere they could be is unnerving for me. I don't believe in using chemicals to solve what should be a material/layering problem, so I'm curious what technically capable people do to solve this properly. Also, where I'm from the humidity is low, so metal roofing is actually a pretty good choice, while in the "Pacific Northwest" people tend to prefer cedar, which can handle the humidity but not alot of UV. What's a modern durable solution for roofing in Japan?
