What's so bad about it? I do my own wood cutting, would love some examples of what not to do. I know the basics to be safe and efficient for small stuff but stuff like giant oak trees, seems sketchy without an industrial mill.

If you can see the middle knife the fighter bowie in my profile pic I made that handle from a block of ancient bog oak. )) Nice stuff. Feels very nice in my hand to grip and everything and I love the deep rich black colour. It's almost like transluscent like you can see deep into it. Nice to work with too. Only problem it's a little soft so it'll get dints and scratches in it pretty easily but no bug deal.

Drying out Bog Oak is the most important element of preparing this log. For more information try Adamson & Low (UK cabinet makers) They use this timber and it them took some years before they mastered the art of drying. Hamish is a brilliant cabinetmaker with an amazing CV. I am certain he would give good advice.

I love all different types of wood. And have collection of mallets for woodworking. And of which the main heads are made from Old Victorian Bowling Balls as they have all stood the test of time because the wood used is the beautiful Lignum Vitae. Lignum Vitae incidentally was used as the “main bearings” in the QE2 Liner “ as there are incredibly hard wearing and self lubricating. I wonder what the smell of the wood was like when cutting the ancient Bog Oak. Which reminds me of someone I once met and he had a piece of very ancient piece of Walnut that had been dug up in Norfolk UK. It was twisted and silver in colour and then drew my attention to the rose-red sap like Amber which was oozing from a crevice in the wood. And taking out a lighter he then burned a piece and it was the most heady exotic scent that I have ever encountered.

Some smaller corrections: "real" bog wood comes from high altitude bogs, situated so it does not have contact with ground water! The only water the bogs receive comes from rain, creating a very acid heavy water condition - the same tannic situation you have when preparing leather. These bogs are exclusive to Northern Europe. Sincerely, the Historian

"STOP THE CHAINSAW!" Safety does matter.. Sad to see people who work with chainsaws for a living NOT know what they are doing. First, you never start a chainsaw that way. Always hold the chainsaw with trigger firmly between your knees or step on it while on the ground then pull the cord. Second, it's ok to saw a log that is only supported on the ends if done correctly. Which is to cut down from top about a third of the way. Remove saw and put a wedge in cut. Then start cutting from the bottom and saw nonstop until you reach the top cut at which time the log will split without getting saw blade pinched.

Unless these guys are gnomes, I think that tree was WAY longer then seven meters before they started cutting it up. As for all the negative comments, this tree fell into a bog a long time ago, and somebody found it and dug it out. This tree was NOT cut down in the present. So, slow your roll, haters! There is another kind of this wood. Oak that has been in bog for only a hundred years or so. It is not black, but has a beautiful blue colour like indigo. It is so rare and expensive that it is most of the time used as veneer because a simple log goes into the ten thousands in sale.

Sorry to say, but these guys look like amateurs. They don’t know how to operate a chainsaw. Don’t know how to cut a log that size. No eye protection. Dangerous use of a floor jack and even put it under the wrong side of the cut for how the log was supported. Cut the base of the tree in the same wrong way. It’s a wonder no one got hurt! Not to mention, a log that heavy needs heavy equipment to move it around. All of that manpower was kind of silly.
